A Great Big Thanks to New York's Finest Comic Book Retailers!!

To Our Nearest and Dearest,

I just wanted to take some time to say thanks to all the people who made our trip to New York Comic-Con 2010 worthwhile.

Before I came to New York, I contacted Forbidden Planet about doing a signing at their shop. Many retailers were busy setting up for the convention and so there were few stores in the Manhattan area that had availability for creators to come in and sign books this week. But Forbidden Planet welcomed me into their humble abode and in just three short hours we moved 100 books!

NYCC was admittedly my first out of state convention and I did not even have a place to setup shop. And so I contacted Jim Hanley's Universe and they were more than happy to give me space at their booth to sell books. In just two days we moved close to 200 books!

I am tremendously grateful to both of these wonderful retailers for being so kind and considerate to an out of towner. And I am even more grateful to the people of New York for giving YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER a chance! On behalf of myself and my entire team, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #3 will premiere in Chicago on 12/15/10 and will make its way to New York a week later on 12/22/10.

Joel Saavedra Interview

Joel Saavedra is currently a college student at Manuel Belgrano. He is majoring in graphic design and has already managed to find work in the field of comics. He currently lives in Rosario, Argentina with his family.

Two years ago, Joel came on board as the letterer for YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER.

When asked to partake in an interview, Joel was more than happy to take time out of his busy schedule to chat with me.

Folks, I am pleased to present letterer JOEL SAAVEDRA!

OKP: You have a number of challenges as the letterer for this book. The biggest being that English is your second language. Could you tell us how you manage to overcome the language barriers that you face while lettering?

JS: This has been a real challenge for me because this was my first job lettering in a foreign language. However, I enjoy challenges, so it was not something that worried me. I must admit that Google Translate came very handy at times. Hahaha!

OKP: How did you learn to read English so well? Have you ever been to America?

JS: I took English classes as a child. I also love to read books that are written in English. I never had the pleasure of visiting America, but I’m sure there will be an opportunity to do so at some point.

OKP: Aside from simply lettering pages, your job also requires you to place balloons in areas that won’t detract from the artwork. Is this a skill that has come naturally or is it something you had to work at?

JS: At first, balloon placement was definitely not a natural ability for me. It took time to understand the concept. You, David Anthony Kraft and I worked very closely with each other. At first, balloon placement was simply about attaching the right piece of dialogue to the character that was speaking. But there is actually a lot more to consider. The art of lettering is knowing where to place dialogue so that it doesn’t crowd the artwork but in fact compliments it.

To transmit the feelings of characters in such a limited amount of space is more complex than it looks. My work is the first thing that the readers see since their eyes naturally wander to the title of the book and once they open it and see the artwork, the next thing they look for is that first word balloon. If the style of that balloon does not sit well with them, it can damage the overall experience. It is my job to invite the reader to delve into the story and the art so that they see the balloons and the text boxes as a necessary component of the overall package.

OKP: DAK and I have constantly come back to you with edits for pages. I believe we went through 10 drafts of the interior front cover of Issue #2 alone. And yet every time we ask you to make a change, it’s never a problem. How do you manage to remain so patient and consistent when you have all these other things going on in your life?

JS: Yes, I remember working on the interior front cover for Issue #2 almost too well. It was a page that required lots of small changes and the fact that there was so much text on it required me to check and re-check my work each time I made the slightest change. When I start a job, I want to make it perfect. Even it means I have to make endless amounts of edits, it is ultimately worth it. I could not live knowing that at the end of the day, I did not give my best.

OKP: So what do you like most about working on this project?

JS: This project has given me the opportunity to meet and work with great professionals. Everyone on the team is very generous, and patient. I learned a lot from working with them. It’s the kind of environment that encourages me to express my own ideas and literally think outside the panel box.

OKP: What do you hope to do once you finish college? Do you want to make a career as a letterer or do you have bigger plans?

JS: I would love to continue working in comics, because it's something I enjoy. My goal is to eventually become a graphic designer (known also as visual communicator in my country). In a nutshell, I would like to be responsible for creating messages that graphically communicate ideas, values, or facts. I would also love to work on the development of movie posters as well.

OKP: Can you tell us more about the other projects you’re working on? Are their any sites we can go to so that we can see you’re work?

JS: In the past, I did some work with Pandemonium Magazine. The lettering samples I did for them are actually how I landed the position as letterer of YI SOON SHIN. Today, I’m concentrating on school but I’m also working with a programmer on designing two web pages. They are still in the initial stages, but they will soon be available online. I can’t really spill the details yet but I will be sure to spread the word once it goes live! I just set up a Facebook account so people can find me on there.

OKP: I have never been a fan of sound effects in comics. But after seeing what you pulled off on the last page of Issue #2, I can now say that we’ll be seeing a lot more BANGS and POWS in future issues of YI SOON SHIN. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us Joel!

Adriana De Los Santos Interview

Today I have a very special guest with me.

Colorist Adriana De Los Santos is based out of Rosario, Argentina. For the last two years, she has contributed her outstanding efforts to YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER.

I am very pleased and honored to finally interview her.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I proudly present the talented Adriana De Los Santos!

OKP: I think a lot of us are curious to know just how you go about coloring. When Gio’ sends you inked pages, do you see them colored in full or focus on individual sections that pop out at you?

ADL: Whenever I receive an inked page, I look at the full layout and try to capture the mood of the page. This helps me determine what sections require immediate attention. From there, I shift my focus until I cover each panel.

OKP: What is your average turn around time per page?

ADL: Well, the greatest challenge for this book is capturing the realism, particularly in the uniforms. I need to pay very close attention to all of the details, which always takes a lot of concentration and time. On average I would say I color one page every three days.

OKP: There have been cases where you’ve been forced to color pages within a very short period of time. Right before we finished Issue #2, you colored Pages 22 thru 24 in less than a week and they turned out wonderfully. So tell us how you manage to remain consistent around the clock.

ADL: I really don't now! Just kidding. That was a very short time span, but I was extremely focused on the pages and never gave up on my desire for producing the best quality of work. And most importantly, I knew that people were counting on me, people who always do their best, so I did what I had to do. There was no other option.

OKP: I’ve always said that you and Gio’ are a perfect pair for sequential storytelling. How do you feel about working together with an artist who lives in Italy?

ADL: Gio' is a great artist and no matter where he lives, I feel like we’ve established great communication, which is a key component of teamwork. I respect his ideas and take him very seriously.

OKP: So when did you decide to pursue a career in comics?

ADL: I always liked comics so six years ago, I decided to become an illustrator and quickly discovered that I liked coloring the images more than drawing them.

OKP: What do you enjoy most about coloring?

ADL: The beauty of color is that it is so personal and subjective. We all have ways that certain colors make us feel. There is so much emotion and the power to evoke so much reaction. To me, that is what makes comic book coloring so special and unique.

OKP: What else have you worked on? Is there a place where people can go to purchase your other works?

ADL: I am actually working on a book called VIRGIN WOLF (written by Alverne Ball with Quality Quill). People can also visit my blog and see my other works; http://delossantoscolordigital.blogspot.com/

OKP: And finally, we’re beginning production on YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #3 in August 2010. Tell us, what you’re looking forward to as the series continues.

ADL: A new book is always a new challenge. Yi Soon Shin is a great hero and I hope that my coloring will help to tell his beautiful story of honor and justice.

Giovanni Paolo Timpano Interview

Hello Everyone:

After completing production on YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #2, I figured that you guys might be interested in getting to know the other talents who are behind the series. So each week, we will be featuring a different artist!

Today I will be interviewing with Giovanni Paolo Timpano, the artist of YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER. Gio’ is based out of Italy and he was more than happy to take time out of his busy schedule to tell us more about his contributions to the series.

GIOVANNI PAOLO TIMPANO

OKP: So Gio’, what initially attracted you to this project?

GT: Well it was different from all the other works that I’ve done before. As an artist, I found a challenge in changing my style by illustrating epic/historical comic books placed in 1592 Korea as opposed to what I’ve grown accustomed to. Apart from the fact that I liked the project itself, I felt that it was also time to try something new.

OKP: There have been many comic books/movies/TV shows made in Korea about Yi Soon Shin. How do you go about setting your artwork apart from the stuff that is already out there?

GT: I never read any manhwa about Yi Soon Shin and I never saw the TV show until a year after I began working on the series. I wanted to first render my own version of Yi Soon Shin and once I created him in my mind and put it on paper, it made it a lot easier for me to view other sources without being overly influenced by them.

OKP: Do you do any research in order to get the look of the characters right? If so, tell us how you go about it and the role it plays in your illustrations.

GT: This was probably the most difficult part of this process because Korean officers all looked very similar in that time period. They all had the same hairstyles and facial composure. I prefer to think that every character was defined through their distinct personalities. I worked on the facial expressions and the illuminations of each character and also paid attention to their body language to make them stand out. It also helps that each of the officers can be defined through their distinct armor colors, which makes it easier to tell them apart from one another.

OKP: Would you mind telling us how you got your big break in comics?

GT: I've always been based here in Italy and actually started my career by approaching publishers based in the US. I had no prior experience but I always wanted to work on American comic books and I figured there was no reason to waste time doing anything other than what I set out to do. I started with short stories in anthologies for 2026 Books, Approbation Comics and Alterna Comics.

From there I began to collaborate with Bluewater Productions and worked on Issues #2 and #4 of VINCENT PRICE PRESENTS, as well as the one shot PLAN 9 STRIKES BACK. I was also the illustrator for the MR. T OGN published by Mohawk Media. After this, I began doing freelance work for Moonstone Books and have worked on all kinds of characters including THE PHANTOM, THE SPIDER, CAPTAIN ACTION and working closely with editor Joe Gentile on THE FLYING DUTCHMAN.

OKP: Most artists usually tackle one of two responsibilities; pencils or inks. Yet you do both and very well. Is this something that has always been natural for you or do you prefer one over the other?

GT: Italian comic book culture teaches us to do both and I think this is a good thing. I believe that this approach makes it a lot easier for foreign artists to break into the U.S market. It makes us much more versatile. Personally, I love inking. I love my blacks and I would feel strange to see my pencils inked by someone else. But I have also noticed that when I do just pencils I pay more attention to details, but I lose a little bit of control.

OKP: What are your inspirations as an artist and sequential storyteller?

GT: As a comic book artist I love talents like Sergio Toppi, Brian Hitch, Mike Mignola, Daniel Zezelj, Frank Quietly, Joe Sacco, Joe Quesada, Jae lee and many more. As far as sequential storytellers go, I find much of my inspiration through the works of filmmakers. Perhaps more oriental than occidental, like Takeshi Kitano, Kim Ki-Duk, Johnnie To, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Shinya Tsukamoto, Park Chan Wook, John Woo and obviously Akira Kurosawa.

OKP: Tell us about some of the other projects you are currently working on.

GT: I’m currently working on a second FLYING DUTCHMAN story that will appear in AIRFIGHTERS #2 and on a personal project called DEAD CORPSES, which is my first creator owned project.

The story is about a man that wakes up in a dark room, unaware of who or where he is. He quickly discovers that his body is covered with strange scars and that there is a tag on his toe that reads “36 hours”. I wrote it with the help of Nicolas Wilson. DEAD CORPSES is a 72 pages graphic novel, and I’m almost done working on it. I've spent a lot of time carefully putting it together and actually work on it during my free time (weekends and holidays). It has also given me a chance to explore my artwork without any boundaries. I really enjoy working on it. I mixed solid classic inks with Photoshop effects and modern techniques.

OKP: Last question; tell us what you’re looking forward to as YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER continues.

GT: Issue #1 sets the stage for what lies ahead for the series. Issue #2 brings us closer to the characters and has a much darker feel to it. Now that all this has been established, I’m looking forward to illustrating the next issues because we get to focus on the battles. I can’t wait to draw the Kobukson armada, and dive deeper into the emotional tragedies that make Yi Soon Shin’s story so great! Its going to be very epic!

C2E2 if finally behind us and overall I think the event went by very well!

This has truly been one of the best cons I've ever been to. The crowd was awesome, there was always a great vibe, and the publishers really put on a spectacular show!

I wanted to take a moment to thank all you readers out there who plunked down your hard earned cash and purchased YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #1 and #2. Without you guys, none of this is worthwhile!

I would also like to take the time to thank the local retail booths that stuck their necks out and helped me move my product! These retailers were dealing with very limited space and yet they always welcomed and encouraged me to hang out and chat with their customers!

Terry Gant over at Third Coast Comics actually rearranged his table in order to keep me in the center stage of his own booth. Thanks to him, I was able to move lots of books! Without Terry, us new guys don't stand a chance!

Patrick Bower with Challenger's Comics was hustling and bustling at this event. Everyone was at his booth buying books and talking comics. These guys really know how to draw in a crowd! Go Challenger's!

Eric Thornton and the crew at Chicago Comics actually hooked me up with a table so that I could could sign and sell books. Everyone on board that staff is super nice and awesome.

Matt Sardo and the folks at Comic Vault have a genuine love for comics. They were super crammed for space and yet they still made room for me.

And finally, the folks at Dark Tower Comics also hooked me up and allowed me to loom around the area without slapping me with their giant sized fly swatters! All jokes aside, they are a really great group of people!

YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #2 POST PRODUCTION

To Our Dear Friends and Fans,

I am pleased to announce that as of 2:30AM on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, production on YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #2 has been successfully completed!

There is more to this book than its contents. This is a product brought to you by a team of artists from different parts of the world; united by their commitment to their craft as well as their audience.

This process has tested their skills and limits. But once again, they have proven that nothing is impossible!

Italian artist GIOVANNI TIMPANO’s work is at its best here. His sequential story telling will not disappoint. Page 10 in particular is my all time favorite page!

Argentinian colorist ADRIANA DE LOS SANTOS is a miracle worker. Her skills shine here like they never have before. Every panel of every page of every comic book I’ve ever seen her work on, comes to life whenever she adds her magic touch.

Also from Argentina, JOEL SAAVEDRA’s lettering brings finality and balance to the artwork. Each page is carefully plotted. His work is truly immaculate.

Residing at the top of Screamer Mountain in Clayton, Georgia USA, DAVID ANTHONY KRAFT, the co-writer and editor of the series, has been working with me since the beginning. We spent hours on end discussing where we wanted to take the story. We always kept our reader's best interests in mind. From the moment we started working together, I knew I could trust his judgment. DAK’s mastery of comic book production is unmatched.

Without these talented artists, none of this would be possible!

It has been an honor working with them on this. They all command my deepest respect and I can’t wait to start work on Issue #3!

I know that if Admiral Yi could see what they have done today, he would be just as proud of them as I am!

Dear Fans and Friends;

I would like to begin this newsletter by thanking those of you who purchased YI SOON SHIN #1: THE TRIAL EDITION. On behalf of myself and the entire creative team behind the series, we sincerely appreciate your support.

I have some exciting announcements to make:

The title of our series has been changed to YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER. This premiere edition of Issue #1 will be available in Haven Distributors catalogue COMICS! in October 2009. Be sure to let all your local retailers know!

YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #1 has been re-edited by our new series editor, David Anthony Kraft, who worked with Stan Lee at Marvel editing early new X-Men, Wolverine as well as Rogue's very first appearances, and more top titles than you know. Although the story is the same, DAK (as we like to call him) felt like there were some changes that needed to be made to better enhance your reading experience.

Now for those of you who spent your hard earned cash on the Trial Edition (now a collector's item!), contact me directly at OLKompan@aol.com and I will send you the new YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER #1 for a dollar off the cover price. YI SOON SHIN: WARRIOR AND DEFENDER

This is a 12-issue limited series based on the true story of Admiral Yi Soon Shin, a Korean naval commander who saved his people from Japanese invasion forces during the Imjin War (1592-1598).

Having never been defeated in battle, Yi Soon Shin won 23 consecutive victories over the Japanese. Each issue will focus on a different battle that helped change the course of the war in Korea’s favor and define Yi’s legacy.

This is a story that sets out to define a real life hero in the realm of comics.

Much like the Nazis during World War II, the Japanese were known for having little remorse for the innocent civilians of Korea. They raped women, enslaved children and killed elders. All that stood before them was one man who could not be defeated in battle.

This story was created by up and coming talents Onrie Kompan, Giovanni Paolo Timpano, Adriana De Los Santos, and Joel Saavedra.

The first issue was edited by Len Strazewski (Prime, JSA) and Mort Castle (The Strangers, New Moon Over Water).
